The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
