The English along with Wales Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
